History of Appleton
In 1868, the Addison Phelps family settled at the mouth of the Pomme de Terre River, drawn by the area's natural beauty and farming potential. They were followed by settlers, including Civil War veterans A.W. and W.V. Lanthop, who built a flour mill there in 1872. The W.J. Jennison Flour Mill, a descendant of the Lanthop Mill, operated on the river until the 1960s.
As more settlers arrived, including Eastern Americans, Germans, and Scandinavians, they organized the township of Phelps, later renamed Appleton in honor of Addison Phelps's hometown. On September 4, 1872, Appleton was formed, and in 1880, a petition was made to establish the Village of Appleton, with a population of 633.
The town grew, establishing schools and churches. A one-room schoolhouse was built in 1872, and by 1880, a larger building was needed. In 1904, a brick building was added for seventh and eighth grades. The 1880 building was torn down in 1916 for a new high school, which received an addition in 1952, including an auditorium. The school operated until 1992, when Appleton consolidated with two neighboring schools to form Lac qui Parle Valley High School.
