Welcome to Benson!

History of Benson

Benson, Minnesota, originally disputed by the Chippewa and Sioux Indians, saw its first white settler, Ole Corneiliusen, in 1866 after the railroad extended to the area. The arrival of the railroad was crucial for the town's growth, with A.W. and W.V. Lathrop opening the first general store in anticipation of the tracks reaching Benson. By 1870, Benson became a trading center, named after a prominent politician, and quickly grew as a hub for the Red River Ox Carts. By 1875, the population reached 300. Despite hardships like smallpox, a grasshopper plague, and a devastating fire in 1880, Benson continued to develop with the establishment of a library in 1911, a hospital in 1912, and modern utilities in the early 1900s.

The town's education system grew from its first school in 1870 to the construction of multiple schools, including a new high school in 1965. Benson also made strides in modernizing with the first telephone in 1893, cement sidewalks in 1901, and the first automobile built by J.B.A. Benoit in 1902. The town celebrated its educational milestones with a Centennial reunion in 1990.
