Welcome to Kerkhoven!

History of Kerkhoven

The city of Kerkhoven, located in Swift County, was first settled in 1865 and platted in 1870. It was incorporated as Pillsbury on March 3, 1881, and renamed Kerkhoven on February 17, 1883, in honor of Johannes Kerkhoven and his brother Theodores, who helped build rail lines from St. Paul to Willmar. The post office was established in 1871 and later transferred to Swift County, with a station on the Great Northern Railway. Monson Lake State Park, established in 1937 in the southeast corner of the city, adds to Kerkhoven’s natural beauty and history.
